William Jewell College is a residential institution that seeks to express its liberal arts philosophy in many ways through the residential experience. The college is committed to a rigorous pursuit of the development of a quality four-year residential program which genuinely seeks to expose each student to the finest living-learning situation that college resources will permit. The residence life system also strives to enhance the educational development of its residents by offering relevant programs designed to meet student needs, including activities offered by resident directors and resident assistants in each building. Through involvement in these programs and in the many leadership opportunities offered through the residence life system, students are better prepared to meet the challenges associated with college life in a responsible and successful manner. William Jewell College is committed to making this experience available to all students to the fullest extent possible.
There are occasions when adjustments to a room configuration, accessible room features, private restroom, or other accommodations need to be made for a student with a disability, so they are able to fully enjoy the residential living experience at Jewell. The Disability Services office receives requests, reviews documentation with team members, and works with the Director of Residence Life and the Housing Coordinator to facilitate housing accommodations for students. Accommodations are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for qualified students, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADA/ADAAA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Fair Housing Act. It is strongly advised that students submit their requests by May 1st for the Fall semester, and October 1st for the Spring semester. Housing accommodation requests can take several weeks to be processed and for the interactive accommodation process to be completed.
Students can request a housing accommodation by visiting jewell.edu/accessibility-services and choosing the Request for Accommodation application link. If students prefer they can also call the 504 and Compliance Coordinator at 816-415-7556, or can inquire by email at henrymr@william.jewell.edu.
Students receiving housing accommodations must continue to submit the standard housing application as soon as it is available to them every year. Students should also communicate with the 504 and Compliance Coordinator every spring semester to discuss any needed changes in housing accommodations for the upcoming academic year.
