Alcohol Policy - Employee

Effective: 9/8/17; Updated 9/29/22
Contact: Office of Human Resources

William Jewell College employees must adhere to all laws related to the possession, consumption, and/or distribution of alcohol, as enacted by the State of Missouri, Clay County, Missouri, and the City of Liberty, Missouri. The unlawful use, possession, purchase and/or distribution of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on the William Jewell College campus. Employees are also expected, if they engage in the lawful provision or use of alcohol, to do so responsibly.

Possession and use of alcohol is allowed by legal-age persons at approved employee or community events held on campus provided that the event is held in an approved designated semi-public or public area as specified below. The Employee Alcohol Policy Authorization – Advance Approval Form must be completed and fully approved prior to having or committing to have any campus event in which alcohol will be served or provided. All Employee Alcohol Policy Authorization – Advance Approval Forms will be filed in the Office of the President.

No use of alcohol by employees will be permitted during the performance of their duties, except by specific exception as approved by the President. This request must be made and approved in advance on The Employee Alcohol Policy Authorization – Advance Approval Form

All types of alcohol may be consumed by employees at College-approved events with the exception of grain alcohol.

The following are the only approved designated areas in which alcohol may be served, provided or consumed by employees or community members on campus:

  • Quad buildings
  • John Priest Greene President’s Home
  • Shumaker Multipurpose Room
  • Pryor Center for Leadership Development
  • Greene Stadium
  • Pre-approved outside areas that have clearly defined boundaries of the space

William Jewell prohibits any person from carrying open containers of alcohol in areas of campus outside of approved designated areas where an approved event is held.

For risk management purposes, events hosted by the President or Presidential Spouse will be co-signed by the President and the Vice President – Finance and Operations.

The John Priest Greene Home is considered a College-owned, private residence and the President and Presidential Spouse can therefore make appropriate determinations to serve alcohol at functions they host privately in the house. As such, no formal approval paperwork is required in these circumstances. College-sponsored events held at the John Priest Greene Home must be approved by way of The Employee Alcohol Policy Authorization – Advance Approval Form.

The College has a separate institutional Tailgate Policy that does not fall within the Employee Alcohol Policy.  The College also has a separate institutional Student Alcohol Policy that does not fall within this policy.

Failure to comply with these responsibilities will be considered a violation of the Employee Alcohol Policy and violators will be subject to disciplinary action.
