Campus housing facilities are locked 24 hours a day and can be accessed with the resident’s student ID. Students only have access to their assigned residential facility. Students should always lock their room door when leaving. Students should never prop external doors.
Students are urged to think proactively regarding campus safety. Students should travel on campus in groups of two or more. In the event students have to travel alone, Campus Safety is available to provide safety escorts to students traveling between parked cars and residence halls after dark or at times when a student has a justifiable reason to feel unsafe.
Visitors & Guests
Visitors are required to be escorted at all times in all areas of campus housing outside of the hosting student’s room. Students are not to let anyone in residential buildings unless they are emergency response personnel or known college personnel in the performance of their duty.
Living in a residential community requires students to pay special attention to relationships they create with their roommate and other individuals. These relationships require sensitivity to sharing a small living space with another person. Students are expected to respect one another’s space and privacy and have an open dialogue with their roommate before hosting guests.
Students agree to the following conditions of hosting guests in campus housing or elsewhere on campus.
- Guests will not be issued College keys. Students may not loan their student ID or College issued keys to a guest.
- The hosting residential student is responsible for their guest’s building and room access while visiting and must remain with their guest at all times.
- Hosting students are responsible for their guest at all times and in all areas of campus and will be held responsible for any damages or policy violation committed by their guest.
- Guests may stay no longer than three nights, unless authorized by the Student Life Office.
Designated guest hours in first-year residence halls (Ely, Eaton and Browning) are as follows: 7 days a week, 10am – 1am. The guest policy is effective for the fall term only. Guests are welcome in the common areas of First-Year residences 24 hours a day, provided they are accompanied by the resident.
Guest policies vary by sorority in Shumaker Hall, determined by each individual chapter’s National/International policy. Sororities prohibit male guests in residents’ sleeping rooms in Shumaker Hall. Each Sorority Advisor will clearly communicate guest policies to their individual Executive Board to maintain compliance with their National/International policy.
