William Jewell College Unveils Re-Imagined Vision for Sustainable Growth and Academic Innovation

LIBERTY, MISSOURI – William Jewell College today unveiled its comprehensive reimagined institutional strategy, marking 18 months of strategic transformation that has fundamentally reshaped the College's academic mission, operational efficiency and market positioning. The College has exited financial exigency, a milestone validating the success of this holistic, ongoingtransformation.

The College formally exited financial exigency (declared in December 2024) following successful completion of its comprehensive restructuring plan. This milestone reflects improvedoperational stability, financial discipline and strategic alignment. Exiting financial exigency does not mean every challenge is behind us, but it is an important milestone that reflects the meaningful progress made over the past 18 months and provides a stronger foundation for the work ahead.

The Re-Imagined Jewell represents far more than a response to financial challenges. It is a proactive redesign of how a regional liberal arts college can thrive by combining rigorous academic traditions with innovative, market-responsive programming that serves learners at every stage of life.

This story is about an institutional renaissance and the creation of a model that strengthens our core liberal arts mission with a focus on career readiness and extends Jewell’s reach to more learners. Applications and new enrollment are up for traditional undergraduates, and thanks to our new graduate programs, total enrollment has surpassed 1,800 students. We are excited about the future."

 

WHAT IS THE RE-IMAGINED JEWELL?

Understanding the needs of the region and learners, the College has been reorganized into two distinct colleges serving complementary missions. 

College of Arts and Sciences: Continues to focus on undergraduate programs, undergirded by a core curriculum steeped in the liberal arts tradition of understanding oneself in an ever-changing world, that prepare students for careers. Innovative programs in Business, STEM fields, Nursing,and Health Sciences have been reimagined to include flexible pathways that allow students to double major and achieve their academic goals sooner at lower cost.

College of Graduate and Innovative Programs: Focuses on serving learners at every stage through new graduate and certificate programs:

• Reaching Up: The College will continue to add graduate programs that meet the needs of the region and learners. The College has added an Entrepreneurial MBA program (600 new students) and an M.S.Ed. in Transformative Teaching and Learning (545 new students)
• Reaching Down: Embracing “real world learning,” the College established the Collegiate Nursing Academy, a Certified Nursing Assistant pathway and CIPHER Cybersecurity Certificate, creating high school-to-college pipelines. Additional certificate programs for high school students are being explored
• Reaching Out: Flexible programs for adult learners and workforce development

Both Colleges have numerous initiatives, including a few examples below on how we are serving learners at every stage:

• Meeting Workforce Demands through Student Programming: The Collegiate Nursing Academy and the College’s traditional and Accelerated Nursing tracks are a direct response to the regional nursing shortage – we can turn out more certified nursing assistants and credentialed nurses faster; The CIPHER Cybersecurity Certificate and the College’s Cybersecurity bachelor’s degree offerings meets market demand given it is one of the few fields with durable workforce demand at every skill level. Existing and new programs are built with employer alignment and an internship requirement that give students both credentials and documented work experience upon graduating from Jewell.The College is proud that 99% of its undergraduates are employed or in graduate school six months after leaving the College. 
• Accelerated Degrees and Articulation Agreements: Jewell will soon offer reduced-credit bachelor’s degrees in business, with other degrees in health science to follow. These programs will allow students to achieve their career goals earlier at a lower cost. The College has developed new and strengthened existing accelerated articulation agreements across law, physical and occupational therapy, counseling, engineering, and osteopathic medicine, including a recent agreement with the UMKC School of Law.
• Enrollment Barriers: Eliminated residency requirements, removed its language requirement, and streamlined transfer credits/flexibility and admissions. Through a $2 million federal grant, the College will deepen its commitment to student success. 

Jewell has also embraced governance and administrative structures to ensure a sustainable future.

• Administration: Addition of Board leadership, including six new alumni Board members with expertise in the technology, business and health sectors, as well as elevating key academic leaders to strategically position Jewell for the future.
• Best-Practice Financial Governance: Implementation of rigorous weekly, monthly and quarterly oversight and cabinet reviews, early warning systems and radically transparent reporting.
• Funding for Scholarships: Generous donors have provided scholarships to attract and keep the region’s best students close to home. The KC Scholars Match Program, the Liberty Valedictorian Scholarship, and the KC Promise, a local scholarship initiative,empower the College to reduce a student’s out-of-pocket expenses, helping keep talent in the area to meet the region's employment needs.
