Transfer Nursing Admission Policy
Effective Fall 2019
1. Prospective students applying for admission to the nursing program at William Jewell College should refer to the Transfer web page.
2. All prospective transfer students declaring nursing will be evaluated on a rolling admission basis. To be considered for the nursing program at William Jewell College, a transfer student must have the following:
- Normally presenting a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 grading scale, based on all previously attended institutions’ coursework
- Achieve a grade of C- or higher in all prerequisite nursing courses and concurrent labs or plan to complete them prior to entering the nursing program:
- Chemistry and lab (CHE 113 or 121)
- Basic Psychology (PSY 101)
- Microbiology and lab (BMS 126)
- Human Anatomy and lab (BMS 243)
- Human Physiology and lab (BMS 250)
- Written Communication (CTI 102 or 120)
- Math for the Liberal Arts, College Algebra or Calculus (CTI 103, 105 or 107)
- Preference is given to candidates with B- or better in prerequisite courses
- Any nursing courses, such as Nutrition, Pathophysiology and Pharmacology, must transfer with a B- or better
- Completion of the nursing pre-entry exam, PSB’s Registered Nursing School Aptitude Examination, as administered by the Department of Nursing, with scores generally achieving the 60th percentile or higher in all categories
- Exam fee to be paid by prospective student
- Submission of a personal statement answering both of the following questions: “Why do you want to become a nurse? Why is Jewell the place for you to earn your BSN?”
- Lengths should be between 250-500 words
- Submission of an involvement résumé that can be in the style of professional or curriculum vitae including employment, healthcare experience and community service
- Length should not exceed two pages
- Submission of two letters of recommendation, signed by hand and sent directly from recommender
- Recent supervisor and academic references are required; personal references will not be counted in the two required
3. Prospective students meeting the above qualifications will be reviewed on a rolling basis by the Department of Nursing (DON) for consideration of an interview. The department will determine if the prospective student will be designated direct transfer or pre-nursing
- Prospective students qualifying for an interview will interview for space in cohorts determined on space and availability by the DON
4. Prospective students who have not met the minimum qualifications listed above may apply to William Jewell College for college admission to complete prerequisite work with the intent of applying to or being re-evaluated by the DON at a later date
- If a student applies to nursing and William Jewell College at the same time, those prospective students will need to submit a completed nursing application file before being considered for an interview
- The DON reserves the right to interview a candidate at any time prior to a student meeting the minimum qualifications for an initial evaluation purpose, so long as the student has submitted all of the documentation
- However, a prospective student will be unable to be given an admission decision for nursing until the time the candidate has met all minimum qualifications
- When prospective students apply in this manner, the DON will notify the Office of Admission with its recommendation of William Jewell College admittance, with the preface that the student will be re-evaluated at a later date for nursing pending their successful completion of all minimum requirements
- If a student applies to William Jewell College without applying to nursing at the same time but wishes to declare nursing as a major, the following will occur:
- The prospective student will work with the Office of Admission to complete the nursing application based on the criteria outlined above in section 2
- The prospective student will be assigned the DON Department Chair as his/her advisor to be sure a member of DON is active in monitoring the progress of the prospective student, and will be labeled as an ‘undecided’ major
- The prospective student will work with the Nursing Student Liaison (NSL) to register for his/her first Jewell term courses to ensure the student is on track to pursue nursing and fulfill all minimum qualifications
- After a nursing file is completed, the prospective student will be evaluated to determine if the DON will conduct an interview
- If the student is declined admission to nursing for any reason, that student may continue at Jewell but must pursue a different major
- If the student is granted admission to nursing, that student will be assigned the proper cohort advisors and have his/her major updated to Nursing through the Academic Achievement Center
5. All prospective transfer students are encouraged to apply to Jewell for transferring any semester prior to the start of nursing term in which they would seek to admittance
- All transfer students will be considered on the basis of minimum quantitative qualifications, supplemental information and an interview with the DON
- Per the Direct Admission Policy of the Department of Nursing, transfer applicants will seek cohort positions on a competitive basis with those Jewell students who do not qualify or who have fallen out of the Direct Admission Policy criteria
