Athletic Scholarships: NCAA DIVISION II

As a proud member of NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference, William Jewell College embraces the “partial-scholarship” model of the Division II philosophy for financial aid in which many student-athletes’ college experiences are funded in part through a combination of academic scholarships, athletics scholarship and need-based grants as appropriate. Limitations may apply to the receipt of a combination of these scholarships and grants provided by the college. Athletics scholarships are awarded upon the recommendation of the head coach. What does “Limitations may apply to the receipt of a combination of these scholarships and grants provided by the college” mean?
When the Jewell Athletic Department offers verbal scholarships, agents of the College may not be aware of a student's comprehensive academic background because verbal offers may be extended as soon as the summer prior to the junior year of high school. Because these offers may be made well before a student is officially admitted, a total value offer includes all institutional scholarship, including athletic scholarship, academic scholarship and other select awards listed above. Once a student is admitted, the total value is then distributed (as applicable) amongst the various programs.
